The Club
I decided to learn to fly with the Wings of Carolina Flying Club located at the Sanford-Lee County Airport even though it's a bit of a trek from my home in Cary. The approximately 30 minute drive is completely worth it for the convenience, affordability, and sense of community the club provides. While there are closer options, none match the overall value that Wings of Carolina offers.
The club's hourly aircraft rental rates are very reasonable compared to other local options. Even factoring in fuel costs and slightly more mileage to get to the airport, the overall cost per flight hour is quite affordable. This makes flight training much more accessible for me financially than if I chose a club based at Raleigh Executive Airport, for example. Saving money is well worth the extra bit of time on the road.
Beyond the very reasonable costs, I really appreciate the friendly atmosphere at Wings of Carolina. I've gotten to know several of the instructors and other student pilots during my time training there. The drive to Sanford gives me more opportunity to chat with my instructor and other passengers on the way to and from the airport. My instructors have been very supportive as I've worked my way through earning my pilot's license. They take the time to explain things and encourage me to keep practicing.
I've made some good connections through the club that I know I'll maintain even after I finish my training. The community feeling is very welcoming and has made the whole learning process more enjoyable. I don't think I would have had the same experience at a larger, busier club based closer to home.
Overall, the combination of reasonable costs and supportive community makes Wings of Carolina the perfect club for me. The drive is a small sacrifice to pay for quality training. I'm glad I chose this club at Sanford-Lee County Airport to pursue my pilot training. The relationships and skills I've gained make the extra miles completely worthwhile.
